Tips for Wire Clip Braces

Tips on Forsus Spring Out

What Constitutes an Orthodontic Emergency?

Dealing With General Soreness

Soreness is not an uncommon issue with braces. It can occur right after you first get your braces and following your adjustments. You may feel tenderness and have some pain when you bite or chew. This is due to the forces the wires are exerting on your teeth. Soreness generally only lasts for a few days and can be alleviated with a warm saltwater rinse.

Sores and Irritation

Sores and irritation on your lips and cheeks are fairly common. They occur when the brackets rub the sensitive soft tissues, and they can be rather uncomfortable. We can provide you with paraffin wax, which you can apply over the brackets so that the tissue can heal.

Getting Food Caught in Your Braces

Getting food stuck in your braces can be both embarrassing as well as uncomfortable. Fortunately, it's an easy issue to deal with. If you have floss with you, you can tie a knot in the string and thread it under the wire to help dislodge whatever is stuck. Otherwise, you can use a toothpick. Just be very careful that you do not poke your gums or damage your braces.

Loose Brackets and Wires

The brackets that are bonded to your teeth are fairly resilient, but eating something too hard can cause them to come loose. A sports injury or blow to the face can also cause the bracket to pop off of your tooth. If your bracket comes loose, give our office a call as soon as you can. Take care until your appointment to avoid any further harm.

The wires are fitted into the brackets. Sometimes, it can come loose. If it does, you may be able to fit it back into the bracket with tweezers. If you cannot get the wire back in, snip it behind the last tooth where it is secure. Call to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

Facial Trauma With Braces

If you experience a traumatic facial injury, it is important to schedule an emergency appointment right away. Traumatic injuries can cause your teeth to become loose or even fall out. They can result in soft tissue trauma or even bone damage. These issues need to be addressed immediately.

Preventing Orthodontic Emergencies

Taking care to prevent orthodontic emergencies can go a long way. Avoid eating certain types of foods, such as those that are hard, crunchy, or sticky, to prevent brackets or wires from coming loose. Avoid playing with your braces or poking at them. Take care when you brush and floss. Moreover, if you play sports, it is important that you get a custom mouthguard. A custom mouthguard can be made from an impression of your mouth while you are wearing your braces, which will allow the mouthguard to provide you with optimal protection.
